We owe so much to our ancestors who fought in the many wars that have ravaged our world.  Looking to one of those wars still remembered today and still so fresh in the minds of many, we find the Tregurtha name mentioned more than once.  These are just a couple of them who fought in what is known as the “Great War”.

Eric Fitzroy Tregurtha (1888-1916) – First thought to have been “wounded and missing”, it was sadly confirmed months later that in fact Eric had “died in action” on the fields of war in France.  He was the son of Henry Alexander Tregurtha and Harriet Eva Martindale, and was the grandson of Capt. Edward Primrose Tregurtha (1803-1880).

Thomas Fabian Speedwell Tregurtha (1888-1915) – The son of Thomas Tregurtha (engineer and gold miner) and Madeline Daniel, he gained one of his middle names from the Speedwell gold mine that his father managed in the 1880’s.  Thomas Fabian was born in 1888, the same year as Eric Fitzroy above, and died at the age of 27 in the Royal Infirmary in Manchester, England, from wounds received while bravely fighting at Dardenelles, France, in 1915.  Thomas was the great grandson of the Navy Captain Edward Primrose Tregurtha (1769-1839) and was the second cousin of Eric Fitzroy Tregurtha.
